There is a crisis in America’s birthing health care system that endangers and kills Black womb carriers, with Black women dying at about four times the rate of white women. Bringing new life into the world is one of the greatest acts of love, and birthing should be treated with care and respect, yet the medical system often prioritizes profit, driving unnecessary C-sections and rushing the natural process. Inspired by the 2022 documentary AFTERSHOCK, which shares the heartbreaking stories of Shamony Gibson and Amber Rose Isaac, I created this piece to raise awareness and support birthing justice. Everyone deserves care, dignity, and support in childbirth.
