Greater Road Runner

This bird is born to run. The roadrunner can outpace humans, take on rattlesnakes, and thrive in the harsh Sonoran Desert, reaching speeds of up to 26 mph despite being capable of flight. Curiously unafraid of people, they pause just long enough for you to admire their feathered crest and red eye patch before darting off again. This screenprint grew out of an artist residency with the University of Arizona Humanities in 2023, where I created an installation at the Poetry Center honoring Sonoran Desert creatures impacted by border militarization and the climate crisis. The U.S.-Mexico border wall has had devastating effects not only on people but on countless species that call this desert home. Featuring three ink drops, this piece captures the roadrunner's fearless spirit and serves as a reminder of the fragile beauty we share across borders.
