I completed this piece at the age of 20. It was my first print at Self Help Graphics and part of the Maestras Atelier - the first all-female silkscreen workshop since the foundation of the program at Self Help Graphics in 1983. Under the direction of Yreina D. Cervantez, the workshop gathered women from various communities of color at various stages of their professional life, and with a range of experience in the medium, in a collaborative and mentoring process from January through April. The Atelier was loosely organized around exploration of themes relating to heroines, goddesses, icons, and erotica.
The piece is about seeing through a man right before he is about to jump into bed with you. Seeing through him when he is trying to play the role of lover and it's just not working the way he wants it to, because his ugliness comes out anyway. This piece deals with pain through comedy.
What they call a "pussy" is actually a big OJO. Because it sees you for what you are. Sex is a raw exchange of energies...and sometimes, the energy is ulgy. In bed, the real diablo comes out. The OJO always will see him, and soon, you realize the little worm is out for your soul. Like many of you reading this, I once made the mistake of falling in love with someone who didn't love me back.
The message of this piece reads: "You are teaching me how to be a human beast and I need an exorcism, badly!"
