"Esperando Una Señal" (Waiting for a Sign)
Silkscreen, Printed on Archival Japanese Handmade Paper May 2007, Los Angeles, CA
This piece is an abstract interpretation of the day laborer's experience in waiting for work. The men in the photos are day laborers in my neighborhood. Due to the increased surveillance and criminalization of day laborers, many of them refuse to be photographed. In order to conduct my studies and interviews, I had to first build trust and share my artistic intentions. The challenges faced by immigrant workers are frequent themes in my work, as it is a struggle that affects my family members and others in my community. The figurative characters are from sketches I developed during an artist residency in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The woman figure on the top is derived from an earlier piece (see previous page).
