Pio Pio
This print is about a little chick, or pollito, as its called in Spanish. I really enjoyed doing this print because it allowed me to experiment with my loose lines and textures, and to reuse previous images of faces and doodles. In my usual approach, I use strong and clearly defined lines.
In this piece, I wanted to move out of my confort zone. The screenprint was hand-printed by Master Printer, Jesus Barraza (shown in photo on left) in a limited edition of 45 on Yellow French paper. You can find it on my online art store.

Throughout 2012 and 2013, I developed various pieces depicting the monarch butterfly, which has been adopted by various migrant rights organizations, artists, and lovers of justice. For me, the butterfly symbolizes the right that living beings have to freely move.
I created 100’s of butterflies on posters, costumes, prints, and drawings. I decided to change things up a bit and combine two mediums to create individually colored butterflies. In this piece, I start with printing the butterfly from a linoleum block using oil based inks, and then add watercolor and color pencil lines in a loose fashion in order to create a dye effect.
You will notice that the butterflies each include a human profile, to uplift the resiliency, courage, and determination of migrants who come in search of their dreams. Each butterfly is hard printed and hand colored, and there is only one like it.
You can find them on my online art store.

On October 5, communities across the country will bring families into the streets to press for dignity and respect for immigrant families. On October 8 at 12:30pm, tens of thousands will gather on the National Mall at 10th Street to celebrate Camino Americano: the Concert for Immigrant Dignity and Respect before marching to the U.S. Capitol to send a message to the House of Representatives: Get Immigration Reform Done; and Get it Done Now. For our families, for our communities, for our country.

Join CultureStrike as we leverage the power of ART and CULTURE to shine light on the growing movement for migrant rights. Migrant communities cannot wait any longer. Not one more family should be torn apart by these senseless practices.

As you prepare to take to the streets on October 5th, use the how-to guide, templates and video provided below to create fun, colorful and eye-catching visuals and signage that will help us send a united message across the nation – Keep Families Together.

After you make art, please take a picture showing off your creations and upload them to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the tag: #art4

Let’s build a public gallery of community-made art.

How To Guide to Creating Stencil Art/Posters *

From my online art store: This is Planet Earth
The imagery for this print was inspired by my time in Vancouver in 2009 and explores the themes of collaboration, growth, and community. The person at the lower part of the drawing is holding a life force in her hand and she is making sure it circulates to others in the group.

When it came time to name the piece, I wanted to allude to the land, and to the planet itself. So in keeping with my practice of naming my pieces after my favorite 80’s songs, the title became “This Is Planet Earth.”

Solitary Confinement is Torture.
Here is the latest about the health of one of the undocumented youth who was part of the action of the border: Maria Peniche is on suicide watch in solitary confinement. What happened to her is exactly what experts say happens to people in solitary.
You can help get the word out. Bring the Dreamers home. No more solitary confinement, for anyone.‪

Politicans and conservatives are waging an all out war on women, our bodies, our access to health, our right to birth control, and our right to free, accessible and safe abortion. Everywhere you turn, the right wing is attempting to further limit and hinder our access to our reproductive rights through anti-contraceptive measures.

I am fed up. Patriarchy is destructive to society, it’s a form of violence against women, and there is no place for it in contemporary culture. We have to call it out when it happens.

I decided it was time for some slut positivity and some major ass kicking of these conservative, woman-hating men.

Racism and white supremacy are prevailing forces in our society and continue to cause inequality, suffering, and institutionalized violence in communities of color. I developed this poster for the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, March 21st. The characters in the piece are singing and working collectively to combat racism.
